The Influence of Instagram on Photography Styles

submitted on 7 August 2023 by photographerlistings.org

The Postmodern Panopticon

The year is 2021, my friends. We now live in an overly saturated mass of digital information where the line between reality and the virtual world has become indistinguishable. As I sip my margarita and watch the setting sun, I ponder over the maddening influence of Instagram on photography styles today.Instagram, a social media platform that has turned the art of photography into a fast-paced game of likes and follows, has become the new panopticon of the digital age. We are all prisoners within its walls, and we freely choose to be watched and judged by our followers. It is a strange, dystopian world where each photograph competes for attention, and the photographer's skill is reduced to how well they can manipulate the platform for their gain.

Photography in Pursuit of the Perfect Square

As I browse through my feed, I notice a pattern emerging in the chaos. The once-noble art of photography has succumbed to the confines of the square format. The tyranny of Instagram leaves no room for the panoramic, the wide-angle, or the vertical. The perfect square has become the ideal, the holy grail of the photographic pursuit. The medium is the message, my friends, and Instagram is dictating this new age of aesthetics. Our compositions are now measured in pixels, not inches, and our photos are now merely a swipe away from being forgotten. The infinite scroll is the new gallery wall, where our images are reduced to mere thumbnails in the vast ocean of mediocrity.

The Cult of the Filter

And who can forget the bewildering allure of filters? These digital straitjackets force our photographs into submission, making them conform to the ever-changing whims of Instagram's algorithm. Our photographs are no longer prized for their originality, but rather for their ability to fit into a predetermined mold of aesthetic perfection. Our world has been reduced to a series of presets, where each image is edited to mimic a particular style, look, or emotion. #NoFilter has become a bold declaration of authenticity, a badge of honor in a world where the authentic has become increasingly rare.

The Homogenization of Photography

And so, my friends, we find ourselves in a world where photography is no longer a means of self-expression, but rather a tool for validation and self-promotion. Our photographs have become a reflection of our desire to please, to conform, and to be recognized by others. The art of photography has become homogenized, as each photographer clamors to reproduce the popular styles of the day. The brutalist architecture of our urban landscapes is now adorned with teal and orange hues, while our sunsets are drenched in a sickly pink haze. Our portraits are no longer about capturing the essence of the subject, but rather about crafting a carefully curated persona for public consumption. Our once diverse photographic landscape has been replaced by an endless parade of the same tired clichés, each image indistinguishable from the next. It is as if we have collectively agreed to adhere to a strict set of rules governing the creative process, each of us merely an interchangeable cog in the great machine of conformity.

Breaking Free from the Chains of Instagram

But fear not, my friends, for even in this darkest hour, there is hope. The key to breaking free from the insidious grip of Instagram lies not in the algorithm or the platform itself, but within the hearts and minds of the photographers who use it.We must refuse to be cogs in the machine, to blindly follow the trends dictated by the platform and its users. We must demand more from our art and from ourselves. We must break free from the confines of the square, and embrace the full spectrum of photographic possibilities.
  • Experiment with alternative formats and aspect ratios – the world is not a square, after all.
  • Seek out inspiration beyond the confines of Instagram – our world is vast and beautiful, filled with countless untold stories waiting to be captured.
  • Push the boundaries of your medium – use your camera to create images that challenge the status quo, that provoke thought and discussion.
  • Above all, be true to yourself and your vision – the most powerful photographs are those that come from the heart, not from a preset.
So, my friends, as we venture forth into this brave new world of digital photography, let us not be slaves to the platform, but rather masters of our own creative destiny. Let us reclaim the art of photography from the clutches of Instagram, and embrace the full potential of our medium. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a margarita to finish and a sunset to photograph – without a filter, of course.
